Life After IIC – Catch Up With Our Intern Alumni
IIC loves learning about the great things our interns go on to do after their time with us! Recently, we got in touch with some of our 2021 interns to hear what they have been up to. From traveling abroad to securing internships, our interns have kept busy with exciting new ventures. To our delight, many of them shared that IIC influenced their aspirations and opened their eyes to international perspectives. Keep reading to hear what they said!
Colbee Cunningham held our marketing position in spring 2021. After IIC, she obtained more experience working in the fields of communications, public administration and nonprofits. Writing to us all the way from beautiful Granada, Spain – where she is studying abroad – Colbee reflected that her IIC internship largely inspired her career path and helped her “[become] more well-equipped to navigate cultural differences, logistical challenges, and language barriers.”
Like Colbee, Everett Mullican continued exploring the communications field following his internship in fall 2021. Right now, he’s an executive secretary for the Public Relations Student Society of America. Everett described his experience as insightful, saying “I learned to open my doors to experiences beyond what I had experienced in communications and marketing, rather than sticking to my old habits. It was important for me to understand my audience and realize that I wasn’t dealing with just the majority demographic in Iowa, but the minority.”
Leigh Carlson also interned with us in fall 2021. She shared that IIC gave her a “deep appreciation for local community engagement and nonprofit work.” As she wraps up her studies in international business and international relations at Drake University, some advice she has for potential interns is: “For those considering applying for an internship at IIC—do it! It’s a fantastic place to learn about, and contribute to, work that uplifts Iowa’s international community.”
